PM Modi Visit Nalanda University Campus: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the new campus of Nalanda University in Rajbir, Bihar, on Wednesday. The new campus, established through the Nalanda University Act, 2010, is near the ancient ruins of Nalanda University. This Act followed a decision made at the second East Asia Summit in the Philippines in 2007.

Nalanda University, originally established in the fifth century, was a renowned institution attracting students worldwide. It thrived for 800 years until its destruction in the 12th century.

What are programmes offered in modern Nalanda University?

The modern university began operations in 2014 from a temporary location with 14 students. Construction of the new campus started in 2017.

Nalanda University, renowned for its diverse academic offerings, now hosts six schools: the School of Buddhist Studies, Philosophy & Comparative Religions; the School of Historical Studies; the School of Ecology and Environmental Studies; and the School of Sustainable Development and Management. It has become a hub for international students seeking a unique and enriching academic experience.

The campus is structured into two academic blocks, each containing 40 classrooms and accommodating a total of around 1900 students. Additionally, there are two auditoriums, each with a seating capacity of 300. Furthermore, the university provides accommodation for approximately 550 students in its hostel. Alongside these facilities, there are other amenities such as an international center, an auditorium capable of seating up to 2000 people, a faculty club, and a sports complex, among others.
